The crook who robbed Indian-American actor-turned-politician Kal Penn at gunpoint may now be regretting – because the Secret Service has joined the investigation of the case, it has emerged.

Penn, real name Kalpen Modi, was robbed earlier this week in Washington D.C. by an unidentified man who fled with his wallet and personal belongings.

According to TMZ.com, the robber also took off with Penn’’s two cell phones, one of which was issued by the US government.

The Harold & Kumar actor left Hollywood in 2008 to join President Obama’’s team as the associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement.

Since one of the stolen phones belongs to the government, the Secret Service is said to have joined the D.C. Metro Police Department in the investigation of the robbery.

White House communications reportedly stopped service on the stolen phone immediately after Penn informed them of the robbery.

“No information was compromised because no official numbers were in the phone,” the New York Daily News quoted a source, as saying.
