To bring the rail strike that has paralyzed the life in Mumbai for the last two days to an end, Central Railway has suspended 20 of the striking motormen. The motormen went on an indefinite strike since Monday asking for enhanced wages and other facilities. They showed no sign of ending the strike that brought the train transport of Mumbai city to a screeching halt. The Railways has termed the strike as illegal.
At the same time, Union Home Secretary G K Pillai wrote to chief secretaries of all the states to review the situation. "The chief secretaries have been asked to see whether there is a necessity to invoke the provisions of ESMA to ensure restoration of services so that general public is not put to inconvenience,"an official spokesperson said.
"In order to enable the IT industry to function in an uninterrupted manner, the government hereby reiterates and reaffirms that IT software industry including IT services, software and IT enabled services in the information and communications technology sector is an essential service under Andhra Pradesh Essential Services Maintenance Act 1971."
"It certainly improves the comfort levels for the industry," said Ms Ratna Prabha, principal secretary of the IT and communications department.
"They can demand security from the police and transport facility even during disturbances as the new order allows 24/7 functioning."
