The state had issued a notification on July 3, 2009 that the municipal  councils of Nallasopara, Virar, Navghar-Manickpur and Vasai along with  53 adjoining villages would be merged to create the new municipal  corporation of Vasai-Virar.


As the campaign came to a close, the  three most discussed topics were water availability, the prevailing  power scenario, and infrastructure development of this town.


The Congress is contesting 48 wards, NCP 46, 17 BJP, MNS  17, 40 Shiv Sena, independent 73. Towards the fag end of  the vote, NCP president Govind Gujalkar district was severely beaten in  the 80th district.


The polls will decide the fate of 383  candidates spread over 88 wards. One candidate of the Hitendra Thakur  led Bahujan Vikas Agadhi has already been declared elected unopposed.
