Nepal’s five-time Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, a trusted friend of India and architect of the landmark peace deal with Maoists, died here on Saturday after multiple organ failure at the age of 87.
He died Saturday at his daughter’s house in Katmandu, where he was taken earlier in the week after spending several days in the hospital.
Top leaders of major political parties, including Maoist chairman Prachanda and CPN-UML’s Jhalanath Khanal, visited Sujata’s residence to enquire about Koirala’s health.
The Nepali Congress also faces an internal war for succession. Koirala, who kept an iron grip on the party, had indicated he wanted his mantle to fall on his daughter.
On hearing the news of the leader’s death, thousands of people gathered outside the residence.
