Notre Dame recruit Matt James died Friday in Panama City, Fla., after falling from a hotel balcony, several media outlets reported.
Word of James' death spread so fast, friends had already arranged an impromptu vigil and started gathering at the school by 10 p.m. In the next hour, at least 75 cars had arrived.
James, who was won one week shy of his 18th birthday, was vacationing in Florida for spring break.
James was a senior at Saint Xavier High School in Cincinnati. Saint Xavier quarterback Luke Massa was with James when he died, according to Cincinnati.com. Massa’s father said his sone is “devastated” and “lost one of his best friends.”
An "impromptu vigil" of grieving students gathered at the school this evening, and a prayer service is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 9am.
