Eclipse marks the first Twilight film to receive a summer opening, a decision that seems to be playing out incredibly well for Summit Entertainment. Stay tuned over the weekend as we report the complete results.
However, according to Box Office Mojo, “Eclipse” is not likely to, ahem, eclipse “New Moon’s” opening weekend total of $142.8 million due to factors like a more competitive weekend movie market and burning off demand via Wednesday and Thursday screenings.
The movie will continue to expand to 4,416 domestic theaters in North America, which marks the widest domestic release in history. Over this Fourth of July weekend, it is also expected that “Eclipse” could pass the $200 million opening box office record set by “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”..
“It certainly is a target for us,” said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Summit. “I’d be real hesitant to say that we will break that. We would love to and are striving to. We have the location and screen count that could get us there. But if the weather isn’t in our favor, if people are out barbecuing and looking at fireworks Sunday night, we may not get there.”
Eclipse is no exception, as many bleary eyed audiences found out at the midnight screenings that raked in $30 million early Wednesday morning, making it the third biggest box office midnight show of all time.
